Me in three images

This, my very first excersise in an architectural studio entails the creation of a blog and self description through three images.

A great piece of architecture

The louvre’s glass pyramid is situated in an intriguing predicament amongst the classical context, once the subject of controversy it has become more synonymous with the city then the museum itself. The main pyramid was originally proposed as a solution for circulation issues upon entry, with three smaller counterparts positioned to create guiding light shafts for each of the separate collections. The structure, despised by many, was described as an ancient Egyptian symbol of death, however it seems to represent a gentle, practical and necessary modernisation of Parisian iconography. There exists a respectful aspect about the glass panelling which doesn’t alter, disguise or overshadow the colour and silhouette of the surrounding buildings, which combined with the intricate metalwork allows a unique standalone appreciation; for what was conceived as a supporting building.

An original picture of something beautiful

Housed in the canopic gardens near Changi international airport, this crocodile is amongst various sculptures crafted from live floral arrangements. It officially resides in the Jewel shopping complex which is itself a prime example of sustainable and neo-futuristic architectural styles. The beauty within this specific sculpture relates its internal dissonance and appropriacy within the park itself. Semantically crocodiles are associated with their murky camouflage, sharp features and scaly texture, all of which are subverted in its construction. The bright warm colours inquire attention, as rounded teeth and a large cartoonish eye draw one in to touch and appreciate its soft floral skin. There still remains tension but after first contact, a sigh of relief heralds a beautiful appreciation for the work. This artwork is obviously appropriate superficially, but also on a deeper level due a similar tension created pervasive modernism within the airport, it invites onlookers to similarly embrace and appreciate the architecture of the jewel shopping complex.

My best creative work

The short story above is my creative piece for HSC extension English, an example of a short Sci-fi writing it tampers with archetypes and perspectives to provide unique didacticisms about modern society. Written during an impromptu class task it was constantly improved over the course of the whole year, slowing overcoming all previous creative endeavours.

Custom Textures

‘Abrasive’ provides uniquely personal and beautiful (in the Burkean sense) texture within an otherwise monolithic, geometric space. It fosters a fascinating interplay between the privileged viewpoints of the car and the workspace, microcosmically embodying the challenges and values imbued within the space, and its design.  Light heartedness of the colouration in ‘Smooth’ helps to define a generally pleasant and artistic building inviting the viewer into the gallery. Its application onto the large draping canopy suggesting a unique approach to design, manifesting as a curiosity towards the gallery and the work within.     The darker ‘Etched’ texture was imposed disjunctively upon the roof structure to emphasise the genteel nature of the curvatures. It was employed away from areas of congregation as to not overpower the observers scale, but instead contrast against the more circular, glistening, white roofs; made further graceful by those geometric shadows overcast.

Week 7 Iterative Imagined Space.

This week has a focus on photography and so students were asked to iterate the imagined space model whilst considering and improving tis photogenics. Since the macro form had already been developed last week,  I opted for a larger scale of 1:20 to allow for further detailing and more furniture , here's how I did it! Please bear with me whilst I attempt a more interactive version of my flipbook presentation, this one should hopefully describe all the steps with some key observations, please comment below on which style you prefer, and thank you in advance for any suggestions. Just as before, thick carboard prevented neat cutting and folding. A sheet of fridge box was cut and had face profiles drawn. Using a Stanley knife the profiles were cut, leaving the faces exposed The exposed faces provided datum for drawing detailed interior features. Initial problems with profiling were allowed for a creative solution to this week's requirements  which state...

Draft Submission

Stage 1: Conception  Introduction  Imagine you are the Dean of a school of Architecture or Engineering. Your school has 100 students who are drawn from all around the world and are supported by scholarships. Your challenge is to design a school that forms a bridge spanning buildings in an urban environment. The urban environment is the lower part of the "UNSW Sydney" Kensington campus; the central building is the Squarehouse (building E4 on this map). In addition, you will design two moving elements that modify the students' view of the school when they see it from locations on the ground plane vs locations above ground level. These different points of view will reinforce or challenge your particular "Theory".
